Today marked the 8 year anniversary for the war in Afghanistan. How do you celebrate this momentous occasion? Well if you are General Stanley McChrystal, you ask the government to send 40,000 more troops.
According to the ABC News story (http//abcnews.com.go/GMA/Afghanistan/afghanistan-war-anniversary-find-strategy/story) that's exactly what he did.
Now, I'm not being critical of the general's request. In fact I believe whole-heartedly that the U.S. Administration should do every thing possible to win. However since the the attacks on 9/11, the U.S. forces did in fact run the Taliban completely out of Afghanistan. When U.S. attention was turned to Iraq, the Taliban has now came back in the country and the insurgent attacks have increased. The number of U.S. causulties have also increased with 8 soldiers killed over this past weekend.
But, is the increased number of troops the real answer to this. Remember the Russians in the early '80's couldn't defeat the Afghans. We also did the same thing in Vietnam in the '60's. Increased troops didn't help either nation in either conflict.
Do I have the answer for what needs to be done in Afghanistan, no I don't. However, I do feel that the increased number of troops is just a quick fix and not a solution. The Obama Administration needs to do what is right by these troops and give them what ever is needed to win. This country also needs to get behind these troops and continue to give them the support they truly need. We also need to finally get the exit strategy in place and bring these brave men and women home safely to their families.

Two things, Michael--first, you need to embed the links to where they show up as underlined, highlighted words in your blog post. Failing to do this will knock a point off each post. Second, the link to the last post's story wasn't click-through ready. That knocked two points off the last post.
ReplyDeleteIf you need help figuring out how to embed the links, e-mail me at hollychism@hotmail.com. I don't check the other one.
